My Desire to Be a Good Mom Led Me to Forsake My Children
Oct 28, 2021Growing up, I was taught that to be a good kid-- you needed to behave and follow instructions, or else society would label you a bad kid. So naturally, when I began my journey in motherhood, I stepped into it with that same kind of mindset. I fell into the hole of believing that society’s opinion was my benchmark for being a good mother-- because I had well-behaved kids controlled by star charts and shame.
It wasn't until I made peace with my own childhood that I realized I needed to break the cycle with my own daughters and really build that connection to fix my relationship with them. Though these old habits lurk around the corners sometimes and rear their head, I am so much more conscious now of when I need to take a step back.
So if you’re a recovering yeller just like me, then I’d highly recommend you listen in on how I managed to unlearn controlling my kids, to working in harmony and cooperation with them!
Episode Highlights:
- My misguided goals as a parent
- Society’s praise for control
- Why we need to prioritize how our kids see us, not society
- Kids’ behavior is not a byproduct of control, it's a reflection of your relationship
